No harm, no foul, right? Wrong.
In a bid to beat back the furor over her compulsive investing habit as previously discussed on TOS, ROC First Lady 吳淑珍 Wu Shu-chen has announced that she will sell all stock and REITs that she owns and donate the profits to charity. The ever-humble administration claimed that this reflected "the high moral standards [Wu] requires of herself.“ That’s not very high, then, not even by Taiwan’s standards. I think we’d have to look back to the dark days of the KMT to see standards like that...
Note that the Chens will only be donating the profits to charity, which I’m sure will not be anywhere near the NT$48.32 million (US$1.5 million) total. I’ll be surprised to see more than NT$2 million, if even that, go anywhere near a charity. Remember, the story has been that she never made any money playing stocks; they can’t give much away because that would show that she’s actually profited. But that doesn’t stop them from milking the charity thing for all it’s worth. The president’s office called on the public not to ‘make a fuss’ over the donation, intentionally misconstruing outrage for admiration.
Wu really thinks that putting cookies back in the cookie jar will solve the problem, pretending to be unaware that real problem is that the clean-government-diet queen raided the cookie jar in the first place. If this were the first time around, I’d say that’s naive, even forgivable. But this is the second time for her, and she can’t claim to be inexperienced or simple-minded again. The unwillingness to apologize or even open up her accounts completely shows just how little respect the Chens have for the principles of clean governance, the DPP, and the people of the ROC.
